Palin is a distraction.
Had Obama made a different choice, or had another candidate been the Democratic nominee, then Rove would have tailored a different distraction that played off whatever theme was emphasised.
That's what Rove does.
He makes elections about trivia instead of your future.
Whatever distraction he creates, he makes it so big and outrageous that it can't be ignored.

However i understand the art of politics and for the time being mccain/palin is beating the pants off obama/biden.

We went in the conventions effectively tied in the polls and came out the same way. I suppose it's possible that palin will hog the air waves for a few days longer, but sooner or later she and mccain will have to campaign apart...and that's where either way the problems start for mccain. If she still hogs the airwaves, mccain will be billed as boring and uninteresting. If she does not, that's good for obama too. I think the worm will turn very soon.
