There are plenty of people that the religious right admire and would have cheered.

Had that been the case it is likely that the VP pick would not have been the main distraction. It would more likely be a swiftboat style attack out of Chicago or something. It's more important to the McCain campaign that the media stops talking about McCain, and talks about something else. That's the way Rove plays the game. He calls it "Sucking the Oxygen out of the Room". As long as the story is something trivial then the issues of the campaign don't dominate.
