Michael, > I think it was Lee Hamilton who said today that there is a 50% possiblity of a nuke attack in NYC or DC over the next few years. Nobody wants to talk about this.

Reminds me of my own "weather forecast" when I attended college. "50% chance of rain or snow." I was right every single time!

Anyway, with a complex problem like Homeland Security and the "asymmetrical war" we are fighting, a perfect solution is almost impossible to come by. If some team of jerks is determined enough to blow up a city (and themselves in the process), they could do it. Look at how easy it was for two idiots with a sniper rifle to keep the entire D.C. metropolitan area hostage.

Numerous liberals on this thread have denied there is any significant probability of this happening -- including CJ and Silent Z that I can remember.

I'm not sure what kind of "protections" you think you can have, other than scanning for the presence of materials that would suggest it -- which they are doing.

There is not a 50% chance as was suggested; it is far lower than that, but it is far higher than the fraction of 1% CJ has claimed.

I don't know how you can criticize Bush for his actions. We haven't been attacked. Obviously, they don't go around disclosing what measures are in place, but they certainly are applying whatever measures are feasible to prevent it.

What we know for sure is that 7 years later we haven't been attacked again. Give the man credit for his success.

"That is an indictment of bush but even worse its the dems lack of interst in the issue."

The democrats tried for years to beef up port security and to scan every container.

Bush opposed it, so the Republicans have blocked all attempts to do it.
