While it made points about why education was a national issue, I didn't get from it why it needs to be a nationally controlled program to address those issues.

I'm going to have to take a pass on that point until tomorrow, Karen. It will take a bit of thought and my though time is all booked from her through to probably noon tomorrow. Got evening meetings coming up for which I need to do a bit of preparation.

If I forget, remind me.

That was a fine rant, John. While it made points about why education was a national issue, I didn't get from it why it needs to be a nationally controlled program to address those issues.

A high-school diploma should guarantee that the graduate has absorbed a certain 'canon' of knowledge, and has certain skills. (I won't specify what these are - but a national debate might be useful). Whatever - the guarantee should be the same, whether the student has graduated from a school in Moose Jaw, AK. or New York, NY.

So I think this being done at the federal level makes more sense that trying to harmonize 50 different State codes. But I am not Religious on the subject, and might be persuaded otherwise. Oh - I do think that public school should be funded by federal taxes - not property taxes. (Before you scream - the increase in Federal taxes ought to be offset by a decrease in property taxes)
