"..what is the explanation for speaking in tongues?"

Easy enough. In the New Testament, on the Pentecost, the disciples started speaking in tongues. The modern Pentecost believe that if they are filled with the Holy Spirit, they can do the same.

Of course, that ignores the small detail that the disciples could be understood by others who knew the language they were talking in. The Pentecost don't speak a real language when speaking in tongues.

That gets explained by them having a private language with which to talk to God.

I suppose ... there is an explanation for why catholics do the communion ritual...what is the explanation for speaking in tongues?

Man, don't ask me! But I'm religious tolerant as long as they don't use it to try to kill other people. There isn't a religion in the world that doesn't have weird myths... the various sects of Buddhism may be the most logical, or the least illogical.
