It's not idyllic here either, Allen. Things are kept private in the church so there might be much I don't know about. I've never known of or even suspected any child abuse or neglect or drug and alcohol problems. But I've witnessed people struggle with mental illness, such as depression and anxiety disorders. Now and then a marriage breaks up. In recent years we've had several young unwed mothers and their babies.

I think this is true of all churches and I know it's getting worse all the time for us. Mormons in the US have a very low divorce rate but it's been climbing right along with the general population rate.

We also, though, have converts who have turned away from lives filled with violence, drugs, poverty...all the problems that break people down. Their examples and stories are incredibly faith affirming and also help us keep our kids on track and avoid those wasted years.

Do you remember the once a month testimony meetings?

OTOH, in my own family, my youngest daughter has left the church. We let her go to school here at the U. of A. to stay with her voice coach. Big mistake. She got off track in college and hasn't gotten back yet. She's 25 and lives in NYC. And she looks so much like Sarah Palin it makes my jaw drop, lol.
