For some reason, as I've gotten older, the fact that many have died for their beliefs rather than denounce has become extremely meaningful and faith affirming to me.<<

I don't mean to quibble about faith, but Joseph Smith and his brother Hyum were killed by an angry mob in the Carthage jail. Joseph Smith is said to have taken a pistol and shot six times at his attackers. Only three out of six chambers fired, and two of the mob were injured.

Hyum was killed instantly when the mob broke through the door, and Joseph was shot in the back while trying to escape out the window.

There's no indication that he had any opportunity to save himself by denouncing his faith.

It's worth noting that Smith was the mayor of Nauvoo, Illinois at the time, and was also running for President of the United States.
