Although I support and believe in many of the same values and practices that are often found in church-going and faith-oriented families (e.g. religious, IMO), such as abstinence-oriented sex education, sex education primarily in the home, human life begins at conception, pro-life, and marriage is between a man and woman, it might surprise to learn that I am at least agnostic and probably more of an atheist when it comes to religious faith in a Supreme Being. But in any event I understand why you were not surprised. Although there are surely many church-going families that may not be particularly serious or deeply sincere about their faith, I think that in common usage religious and church-going are used roughly interchangeably.
