McCain's own website has a video of him getting off the plane in March 1973. He has a bit of a limp, but he wasn't crippled then. He is saluting to every scrap of brass on the base.

He doesn't seem to have got cripplied until Nixon offered him all those medals if he would play hero. It's been a pretty good gig for him. Too bad he won't share with the real disabled vets.
