They were fearful that they would lose a number of red states, so they bucked up the base. You make a very good point that, if most of the Palin effect is in the south, it diminishes the impact of that increase.

I suspect that, as more information comes out on the real Palin, that bump will subside. And, it is my opinion that McCain has blundered away that lead with this latest scourge of negative attacks. At least the Bush campaign was smart enough to run those through surrogates. Mud is dripping from McCain's face right now...
