Well, let me clarify what I mean by negative campaigning. All campaigns must compare and contrast. If McCain comes out and says Obama's tax plan is FOS, and here is why, I think they classify that as negative but I consider it fair game.

It's the lies, smears, and innuendo that have nothing to do with the issues. Obama's campaign has stayed pretty clean - check FactCheck.org - but McCain turned to the dark side, in the past few days:

1) Practically accusing Obama of being a pedophile, instead of the fact that he was trying to protect kids from pedophiles.

2) Accusing Obama, a very respectful individual who has consistently phrased his opponents, of calling Palin a pig.

3) Accusing Obama of smearing Palin, and using FactCheck.org as a source, which resulting in FactCheck essentially calling the McCain campaign liars.

This recent dip - after the previous smears about Obama only wanting to visit troops if he could take cameras, or McCain's contention that Obama would rather win a campaign and lose a war - is simply not a tit-for-tat. It is a concerted effort by McCain to use Rovian tactics to win. Makes sense when you consider how many Rove aides are in the campaign - and Rove admitting that they call him for advise.
