I don't wish to get into a one on one comparison, because there's plenty of material on both sides.

I can tell you with a fair degree of certainty that politics have not changed all that much in the periods that I've studied. I'm particularly familiar with a period during the Civil War, when gun battles were probably fought over the naming of a city.

The only thing that has changed is the mode of political communication. Today it is instantaneous, and therefore frequently poorly reasoned out.
