Some people want prestige, others want to actually do something, to achieve something. Just take a back-bencher like Obama. He has not achieved a single thing in 2 years in Senate (before he left it to campaign).

The last time a sitting senator was elected President was JFK.

Since then it's all been former governors or VPs. Or in the case of Eisenhower, a former general.
