Even the definition of patriotism is up for debate. - We're making real gains against Al Qaeda, but those go largely unnoticed by the public. Why doesn't anyone care as much? Is it Iraq? Once we're out of Iraq, we're in danger of becoming complacent once again. And with a constantly evolving Al Qaeda, that's exactly when they'll strike again. - Come to think of it, why don't more people point out how we haven't been attacked in seven years, even though Europe has been attacked at least twice since 9/11/2001? I thought the whole world hated Bush. Why go after innocent Europeans then? - As Iraq has shown, basic human rights cannot thrive without meeting the basic needs for security. If we can help it, even for a little bit, we should always uphold human rights even for those we have captured, but the truth is that freedom is never free. Those who forget that will watch their freedoms quickly evaporate as security goes away. - One thing I can't stand is the existence of otherwise intelligent people who willingly place themselves in a state of denial. Geez, is your damn pride so important that you can't admit the obvious, no matter how painful it may be? No wonder we have a "culture of corruption" in government at all levels. And that goes double for the Bush administration, who suffered the most from denial, than anyone else. - Let me be clear about this: THESE TERRORISTS ARE NOT MARTYRS. They are murderous cowards who want to go down in a blaze of glory and take God knows how many souls with them. They are no more dignified than losers who bring guns into schools and shoot up the whole place, such as Cho Seung-Hui, Eric Harris, and Dylan Klebold. Doesn't matter if they kill dozens or thousands, they are still losers and will have a special place in hell reserved for them. - Yet in the face of sheer evil, good rises up and triumphs. That's how I know we live in the greatest country on Earth, where the most heroic deeds are done in the face of real danger. - The example set by the passengers of Flight 93, for instance, helped ensure that the terrorists will NEVER hijack an American plane again. Just ask Richard Reed, the "shoe bomber." - The police and the firefighters who ran into a burning building when everyone else was either running away or stood gawking proved that bravery is real and not just something you see in the movies. - The outpouring of love and support for all of the 9/11 families was beyond imaginable; even Suze Orman had to be called in to give financial advice to those with more donation money than they knew how to spend. - Of course, when Suze asked who would give up the money to see their loved ones alive again, every single person raised his or her hand. - There is a time for everything under the sun. Today was a time of rememberance, to reflect, and I think we all need that. Tomorrow, we'll go back to the regular partisanship, the flame wars, etc. I just hope that no one takes anything that isn't worth it too personally. Especially the trite things I say from time to time. ;-) In conclusion, life is too short to waste on the meaningless. People should remember what is really important. Read the writings of King Solomon, or go rent the DVD "American Beauty." ;-) Even if there is no consensus, the meaning of life should be clear to everyone. Tenchusatsu
