It has nothing to do with beer. It about identifying with the candidate. You and I identify with candidates who are elite. Some people identify with Joe Six Pack. And people are more trustful of those with whom they can identify.

I agree with you: there is a long-established tradition in America that is wary of 'intellectuals' - that characterizes them as 'impractical', 'dreamers': Dusty misfits who haunt libraries. We the People seem to value 'Horse Sense' over mere 'Book Learnin'

Of course, I think this is not a fair box to put Obama in.
