Thanks Jacob and Willcousa. It's impossible to say if the upcoming bottom will be any more a long term bottom than the one around 9/11. But even if it is no more a long term bottom, options bought at the 9/11 bottom, had to have offered someone a chance to profit as AMAT went from a low of 12.81 to high of 26.94 in seven months before falling back to an even lower low in 2002. Two years later AMAT was back as high 25 after hitting a low below 10. Is it possible that you picked the wrong options or simply did not take a profit when you had one?
