They didn't want to repeat what happened during Rita. More than 100 people died on the road, the storm killed 9. Now true, many of those casualties occurred when that bus caught on fire.

Ike is a cat 2 storm, might be a cat 3 by landfall. The danger is if you are caught in the storm surge. Well, that and the tornadoes.
