It took the Spanish-American war in 1898 to put the final period in the Monroe statement, but except for the Cuban missile crisis, it pretty much worked ever since. Very few other countries have the power projection ability to launch forays in our hemisphere, and those that do are either our allies or deterred by overall US forces.

A country can achieve a lot without firing a shot if they are smart (and ready to shoot when necessary).
