71% of Americans at the time were for the war.

And about 65% of this 71% probably voted for bush in 2000
Meaning he only needed to convince another 25% or so that he wasn't lying. How hard is it to fool one out of four avg joes?

You're claiming Democrats didn't have the courage of their convictions.

I don't know if that is true. Its entirely possible they have no convictions.

71% of Americans at the time were for the war.

True, it should be remembered this was a very popular decision. Of course, its also true the Iraq Liberation Act of 1998 had strong bipartisan support too.

Obama was against the Iraq war from day 1!

Of course, he was a state senator and his opinion didn't matter much. He stated at the 2004 convention he didn't know how he would have voted if he'd been in the Senate.

In a meeting with Chicago Tribune reporters at the Democratic National Convention, Obama said,

“On Iraq, on paper, there's not as much difference, I think, between the Bush administration and a Kerry administration as there would have been a year ago. […] There's not much of a difference between my position and George Bush's position at this stage. The difference, in my mind, is who's in a position to execute.”

— Chicago Tribune, 07/27/04

How could the media have missed reporting this?

Three Obamas on war —

1) Critic of Hillary Clinton on war authorization vote — a core message of his campaign

2) Obama: "No difference" between Bush position on war and his own (Chicago Tribune, 07/04)

3) Obama: "Doesn't know" how he would have voted on war vote (Chicago Tribune, 10/04)
