I would find it a lot more interesting if people could study people not wired for God, or mystical experience, or the spiritual realm- at least as experienced as some sort of "contact"- because if it IS wiring, and people who are not wired for it can't pick "it" up, whatever it is, you know the answer to at least one thing- free will has nothing to do with it. Which, I think, would be an interesting question to have answered.

I speak as a person who could never have believed in God. I mean you can't force yourself to believe. Things either strike you as something you can believe in, or they don't. So of course, I'm more interested in why people can't believe- not that I wouldn't like to understand believers, but all that is so outside my frame of reference it's like reading about what cat's believe. In other words, I have no personal connection to it- and I really can't evaluate it on a personal level, I can only look at the experiment and say to myself- "how interesting".
