He said that experienced lawyers, when faced with a rookie opponent, will often let loose a small mouse (figuratively speaking) for the rookie to chase up and down. Something unimportant to distract the rookie and waste his or her time.

By this reading, is Sarah Palin the 'mouse', distracting Obama from his focus on John McCain?

Obama is still trying to figure out how to deal with Palin, but his efforts are being and will continue to be exacerbated by his following which is highly vocal and often irrational.
