Actually it's almost a direct quote from Virginia Woolf's A sektch of the Past. I refrained from stating that as I was responding to Stan and a bit leery of the line from Blazing Saddles hurled at me ;-)

She came very close to nailing it all down when she said "behind the cotton wool of daily life, moments of non-being, the fragmented nature of existence, beneath the everyday moments of non-being there exists a pattern - something which unites everything." She found a theme, a pattern recurring...like music, but couldn't bring herself to make the final leap.

It's not mystic or magical if one recognizes the underlying pattern
