Some Germans actually embraced communism during and after the war. The Russians formed units of captured soldiers who switched over to communism to fight Hitler. That didn't make Hitler a socialist.

I strongly recommend "Inside the Third Reich" if you want a true look inside the mind of Hitler and the Nazis.

And since you quoted Toland, another EXCELLENT book is "But Not In Shame: The Six Months After Pearl Harbor". Stirring, with the climatic come-from-behind heroic victory at Midway. The movie really did not do that battle justice. One of the few instances where the reality was more dramatic than the movie.
