"Other than during hurricanes, is Galveston a pretty cool place?"

Galveston is different. It was one of the wealthiest cities in the country. It was the second largest port in the country. But, when Houston dug the Ship Channel and built its port, it was able to slowly drain away Galveston's economy.

So there is some beautiful architecture for a tourist town of its size. In addition, they have the widest variety of azaleas in the world. There was a ship's captain who collected them around the world and shipped them back. Then there is the mob influence, modern advertising was born there, refrigeration and many other things. It has a very rich history.

Part of that history is quirky inhabitants. Islanders tend to be very informal. T-shirt, cutoffs and flip-flops are the standard attire. About the only ones who wear a tie are morticians or entry level brown noses at American National Insurance.

Now, the downside is that, while Galveston has some very wealthy families, they don't have much of a middle class. And they have a lot of poor.
