SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - The vice presidential debate could have been in Spokane instead of St. Louis in early October. But Washington State University passed on a chance to host the debate in eastern Washington.

The decision was made nearly a year ago, when the choice for presidential candidates was still up in the air.

Spokane County Republican Chairman Curt Fackler said the excitement generated by the debate could have carried over into local elections. And the candidates could have helped raise money for local candidates.

But officials at WSU say they're confident they made the right decision because no one was stepping forward to help sponsor the debate. Officials at the Spokane Convention and Visitor's Bureau agree. They say hosting the debate could have cost more than $3 million.
