but rather the sheer bald incompetence of the Republican governing philosophy (or lack thereof) in regards to financial stewardship.

Part of that bizarre equation where 30% of the unhappy 80% seem ready to vote for exactly more of the same. Would the hands-off Republican appointees under Bush magically morph into effective regulators under McCain?

Not with "experts" like Phil Gramm calling the shots on economic policy (let's not forget his wife helping to deregulate Enron).

The real story of this election is not Obama, McCain, Palin, or even the war, but rather the sheer bald incompetence of the Republican governing philosophy (or lack thereof) in regards to financial stewardship.

Man, you've got that right. I think Obama perhaps should sign Rubin up to be Treasury Secretary again right now and have him stump around some states like OH, PA and MI talking about how economic regulation has been one of chief failings of the Bush admin and Republicans like Gramm generally. Not to mention Greenspan, although he at least has just come down on the proposed McCain tax cuts. Yeah, I know, he said that we need to cut govt if we are going to cut taxes, but the fact is we aren't going to cut govt much right now, no matter what McCain or any other Republican says. Even a Republican Congress + President couldn't do it in the 4 years they controlled everything.

Of course Rubin was in Treasury when we had the stock market bubble, but I lay that at the feet of Greenspan more Rubin--the former held the power to raise margin rates and didn't do it even as he was warning about the possibility of a bubble.
