Now that Bank of America is stocked up on Merrill Lynch, that leaves more leeway for Barclays to swing a deal on Lehman Brothers because Bank of America will be less likely to take on another one right now. It was probably an either/or situation.

It makes sense to rationalize the assets into a going concern rather than just shut it down and liquidate the assets.

Perhaps the USA will see the merit of attracting $20bn or so from sovereign fund/Barclays to help boost things and will be willing, when under more pressure, to agree that it's worth it to keep things going nicely.
