Well, Lieberman isn't exactly a Democrat these days. And I don't think there were any threats of rebellion when Kerry floated McCain as a running mate. McCain made a big thing about bipartisanship in his acceptance speech, but of course that speech was sort of an outlier in the general red meat festness of the Republican convention.

It's not exactly a surprise that McCain would bow to party orthodoxy, given his recantation on the most obvious example of his genuine independence, his opposition to the Bush tax cuts. But given the Rovian tone that his campaign has taken on, he may as well claim he's a uniter, not a divider, just like W.
