Democrat Lyndon Johnson was the President who set Freddie/Fannie up as a quasi private company-government sponsored enterprise. He should have completely cut the tether at the time. During the intervening yrs Democrat politicians have used Freddie/Fannie for political purposes--threatening ruin of any critics. Their tentacles spread far & wide throughout the country, in order to build support for themselves and Democrat politicians. Both agencies have operated on a flawed business model--That's why Pres Bush had refused to appoint gov board members.

Check Cspan's recent interview with Peter Wallison of the American Enterprise Institute. Very revealing.
