I feel sorry for them, too. OTOH, I have a ninety-something aunt who is borderline retarded and she knows to keep her money in the bank.

Vanguard was holding lots of Lehman Bonds as safe investments for seniors.

fh, do you have a link for that claim.

Because I have some money with Vanguard, none in their bond funds, I receive weekly and monthly updates from a newsletter that tracks Vanguard. The weekly report this evening, which usually comes on Thursdays but, for obvious reasons, had a Monday supplement this week, had the following paragraph.

Short-Term Investment-Grade had 0.8% of assets in Lehman bonds, Short-Term Bond Index had 0.5% of assets, Intermediate-Term Bond Index had 0.7%, Total Bond Market had 0.4% and Long-Term Bond Index had 0.5%. Intermediate-Term Investment-Grade was the most heavily invested in Lehman bonds with about 1% of assets in the paper.

All told we’re talking about $530 million of Lehman paper out of something on the order of $450 billion in Vanguard’s bond assets.
