But since we've been corresponding more or less for around ten years, I'm going to indulge myself. This financial meltdown situation is getting treated by both major parties' candidates as, in effect, nobody's fault. Of course the mere existence of the McCain/Palin ticket is a humiliating travesty for the U.S. that beggars any effort to comment on it, But I'm sad to say the Dem ticket is really not much better, it's just not quite as vividly Vaudevillian. Alexander Cockburn in the Nation called Joe Biden "the lifelong serf of the banks", and I've no doubt he's right. These guys in the last couple of days have been tripping all over themselves in a "vacuous sound-bite" contest, with both sides losing and no winner. But that's understandable, because the only people running for president are the guys who SAT ON THEIR HANDS WHILE THIS ALL BUILT UP, plus somebody's pet pit bull with lipstick. So the issue of accountability is a 100% non-starter. Which guarantees it will happen again (and again). When McCain called for a "9/11 commission" to study the "actions of individuals" yesterday, he should have been wheeled straight into a rest home. The inevitable outcome of this real estate swindle WAS well-known long in advance and in fact was written about extensively on these very forums, years before housing prices ever began to decline. The fake money, the fake prices, the fake "homebuyers", the fake mortgages, the fake derivatives with their fake ratings, the lies of the bankers, the apathy/complicity of the Congress and the Fed, it was all known and commented on in advance, and all the participants were known. This was no more a matter of free markets at work than a stickup at the corner 7-11. At least some guys went to jail in the Enron thing. This, they're just going out to the Hamptons and look through boat magazines. The issue of genuine name-naming personal accountability has not been, and will not ever be raised, maybe modulo a flunky or two. It's beyond me. WAY beyond me. --QS
