Turning a candidate into an object of ridicule has worked well in recent history, the right did it to both Gore and Kerry.

And in fairness, Quayle on the other side.

Once the narrative is established, (Gore the serial liar, Quayle the dunce, W the steely-eyed rocket man) THAT'S WHO YOU ARE. No amount of evidence to the contrary will change the meme.

I am more interested in how this narrative becomes established in the first place.
