I probably know about as much as you do. I think the surplus funds get "invested" in US treasuries and the actual cash gets used as part of the government's general funds expenditures. So basically, we're racking up huge social security debts to our citizens. Is it real debt? Some here would argue that it is not, because we can just legislate it away. But from where I'm sitting, I've put a ton of money into that damn system and I sure as hell expect to be paid back. So I'd say, yes, it is a real debt owed to me and my American brethren.
