You're right, you do have to let the market work.

Now ask yourself this;how has the market worked up till now? You think it has been a level playing field? You think there has been no intervention the last few years. Intervention is the name of the game when the market does not work the way the public deems it should based on failed policies and practices. GM and F both declaring Chp 11 would come as no surprise. If it happened both companies would restructure under BK protection;the common would get wipe out and the bond holders according to seniority will prevail and start over again. This is the way our system works. The difference is when capital becomes weary, illucid and transparent. The US capital via banks and brokerages who have meshed and intertwined their businesses puts great strain on liquidity which is the foundation of our system. You can't let these guys fail outright no matter how angered or devoted you are to core market values. Core market values have been compromised and had been for some time now. What we need is stability and regulation which would instill and mandate strict policy enforcements. Interestingly enough both Presidential candidates have your opinion. I wonder if their opinion is based on public sentiment or the need to do the right thing?

As I type I see the $RUT.X is leading this market out of its dispair. I smell the cookings of some more 'Sweet Mamma's Intervention'.

You start down that road and the gov't. ends up backstopping everyone... nationalization of all substantial private enterprise? Sounds suspiciously like socialism and/or central planning... ironic that we arrive at this place at the hands of those who dislike the consequences the most...
