It actually looked as though he really has a Muslim background. Also, a lot of people believe if you're born Muslim, which he was, then it is something that you don't discard that easily. Combine that with his propensity for lying and Rev. Wright's anti-Americanism, I can see why they make the mistake. Finally, he clearly is sympathetic toward Muslims, and many people feel that Muslims attacked us and anyone who is a Muslim sympathizer is a hazard to Americans. And the name doesn't help.
