Should a person who has been convicted of violent crimes be allowed to go buy a gun the day he is released from prison? What about minors? Should a child of twelve be able to walk into a store and buy a machine gun and ammunition?

Your premise is preposterous because: 1) Convicted felons may not possess firearms, which is a proper regulation of bad behavior not firearms, and 2) Machine guns are not legal for the average citizen to possess, and nobody is arguing that they should be.

I think a 12 year old should be able to go in and buy a rifle or a pistol, provided his parents agree and assume responsibility for his behavior. I bought my first rifle at age 12 and my first pistol at age 13. My first big bore handgun at age 15. I used them on my trapline and for hunting and never broke the law.

I'm fine with regulating criminal behavior, just not interfering with the legal and constitutional rights of others who obey the law.
