Kon, this summer I finally got to know better a man and wife who bought the house behind me. The husband and I became friends because we are the ones in our families that vegetable garden, so I unbolted a door in the wood fence between our yards and we exchanged tools, shared produce, etc. One day about a month ago, he and I were shelling black-eyed peas under a tree, chatting, and he suddenly told me he had had a 30 year career with the NSA. (He referred to it as the 'no such agency' which I had never heard before and thought was cute.) The conversation veered off into semi-politics, and he made the statement that at the time of the Iraq invasion, no one in the NSA believed in the WMD argument. He said people, himself included, scoffed at the notion our intelligence agencies didn't have an accurate assessment of the danger or lack of danger of Iraqi WMDs.

I was fascinated by the whole exchange, and your comment about 'shadow government' reminded me of it.
