I find it interesting that you support the idea of going to war because another nation might attack us, but you don't support the idea of preemptively taking people's machine guns away.

Because that would mean that you wouldn't take any action relative to a person's machine gun until after they had abused it, and presumably harmed someone.

Or am I just failing to grasp some subtlety in your position?

Ah, but the point then is that if they (those machine guns) weren't just hanging around the house, they could not be used to shoot up a McDonald's. As was done.
