Oh, for crying out loud again. theatlantic.com , way more than you want to know about zarqawi. Everybody knows he was in Iraq before the war, but he was in a remote area of Kurdistan, way out of Saddam's control. If W wanted to go after Zarqawi, he could have easily done so. That wouldn't have done much for the grand scheme though.

Of course, W's excellent adventure in Iraq turned out to make the latter day great gamers' grand scheme look pretty laughable, but that's another story.

There's no contradiction. If I recall correctly, Zarqawi had a base, and a training camp, in Kurdish northern Iraq that was not under Saddam's control.

And sure, there have been reports that our intelligence agencies knew all about that base, and that we could have attacked it.

The important point is that Saddam Hussein wasn't Zarqawi's host, nor was he his collaborator.
