I think there are two things he needs to do.

One, stop being professorial as Shrum says. For the past three days or so, he has demonstrated that ability on the stump. McCain has that ability to give a direct answer using a word or two at the beginning of his response. he did so very well at Saddlebrook and stole the show from Obama.

Secondly, Obama needs to question McCain directly while responding. Things like "Where's the beef"; "I knew Jack Kennedy and you are no Jack Kennedy" etc. People agree that he needs to sit down with people like Ahmedinijad. But he has yet to demonstrate his skill at firmness in such negotiations and he can start that in the debates by looking firmly in McCain's eyes to make a point. And the issue he needs to do so is when the issue of "change agent" is debated. He needs to steal that mantle away from McCain.
