Very few federal programs get eliminated, and many of the worst of them continue to grow indefinitely.

Popular myth. The good ones do grow, sometimes. Bad ones generally get funding cuts and shrink. Sometimes good ones get funding cuts. Some bad ones do get sunsetted or 'reorganized' out.

Do the governments make a lot of mistakes? Sure. They are far larger and far, far, far more diversified than any private enterprise in the world.
