>>I'm struggling with this one Allen. First of all, I don't see him saying the liberals are elitists. The word "liberal" appears exactly once, a reference to the "liberal elite," a recognized, I think, subset of contemporary liberals. And "left" appears exactly once, a mention of historical connection with populism. "Elitist" doesn't appear at all.<<

Karen -

I may have had a senior moment myself, seeing a connection that Brooks was not trying to make. It's easy to get paranoid about such things.

If Brooks only meant to refer to a subset of liberals, who do make up the "elite" of the Democratic party, then I was making something out of nothing.

I do think that populism has been a recurring theme with the Democrats. Jimmy Carter was a populist. I think Obama's oft-repeated message about how "we" are going to change America, not from the top down but from the bottom up, is unquestionably populist.

The right wants to make sure that people who vote based on who they'd rather have a beer with that they are better off with a regular guy like McCain. After all, he's only the son and grandson of Navy Admirals, who has been part of the Washington power elite for two decades, and has a wife who wears three hundred thousand dollar outfits. So they call Obama (and all Democrats) elitists.

I know. I've wandered off our topic. But since it seemed like there was no "there" there anyway, I just took the opportunity to opine.

I'll stop now.
