Vignette from the boonies of socialized medicine:

Local kid, 5 years old, parents not rich, complains of leg pains or somesuch this Saturday past.

Monday, mom has an appointment with her ob/gyn re a newborn, brings him along, decides to mention it, blood tests get ordered.

Tuesday, call, bring him to the local hospital immediately.

Wednesday, the air-ambulance comes (400 miles) and he's in Quebec city.

Thursday (yesterday) he's on the phone telling grandparents how nice the doctors are, they've already given him TWO presents (one for lying still the required 45 minutes before the bone marrow thing ...)

Poor little guy's got leukemia, but he found his way to Quebec 's premier hospital within 48 hours ...
