I remember the S&l resolution trust. Seems to me it started out at couple of billion. Ended up at 100 billion. I'll bet the yankee taxpayer is still paying for it with interest.
Anyway, better multiply any number they start at by a minimum of 10 IMHO.

As an aside, I also remember that a few years later when Real Estate prices started to turn up again , they sold every last shred that they had taken on at 10cents on the dollar.
The guys that got to bid and buy this stuff were the very small elite group that dumped it on the taxpayer at 100 cents on the dollar a few years previous.
