Mike,

Check out this Google Earth file that allows you to see a before and after for the hardest hit areas:

mw2.google.com

The surprise to me is how much worse it is 25 miles up the coast from Galveston. Check out the town of Gilchrist. Only one house left standing:

cnn.com

And check out what looks like a sturdy bridge in Gilchrist that got taken out. Musta been a helluva surge.

To see the before images, just uncheck the box next to that kmz file in the panel on the left in Google Earth.

Although the 'after' images aren't taken from a satellite, you can see the potential of such images. That's why I like GEOY as my top pick. They are going to make a killing because of stuff like this. In fact, I just saw on NOVA that using their IKONOS satellite they have been able to find with 100% certainty Mayan ruins where they never thought of looking. Of course, it's not like looters didn't find these things first but they still found some fabulous stuff.
