I got the same impression. Something about GLD doesn't feel right anymore because of the US Gov't wildcard. I could envision the commodity ETF's being banned, there was already a lot of conversation regarding USO until oil fell.

Though the gold stocks have fared worse for some time, they may be the better route to owning gold, especially since the mining assets are located abroad.
