Ah but the govt coerced the banks to make bad loans (Community Reinvestment Act) and govt (Democratic) insiders ran FNM and FRE into the ground, making millions and hiding the losses with crooked accounting.

Those loans were repackaged by the private sector and sold... if there had been over-sight and transparency that couldn't have happened.

Are you kidding. FNM and FRE EXISTS TO package and sell those mortgages to the private sector. It has been government policy to for lenders make bad loans and then securitize them, passing them on to private owners.

This isn't a failure of no regulation. It was bad regulations that created the mess.

I am in my second week w/o power at home and so far the govt has done nothing for me or anyone close to me.

Talk to the 'private' utility.

They're working on it. Just a massive job.

Are your government owned roads clear?

Yes, me and my neighbors cleared the street in front of my house the day after the hurricane - two big pines were across it. One guy down the street had a chain saw, he played lumberjack and everyone else toted and hauled. Same thing all over the city. People cleared their streets and roads. Then they raked their front yards. Now we all have big piles of limbs and logs in front by the curb.

Government street lights working?

No they're pretty much all out - 99% or so. People treat every intersection as a fourway and stop. No problems.

No looting, no hordes of law breakers, no breakdown in civilization. Just hassles from having to depend on breezes to cool you, having to get home before dark to shower b4 its too dark. Beign awakened by cars driving down the street cause your windows and balcony doors are open to let the night air in. Getting tired of the drone of generators scattered around the neighborhood. Oh well.

occasionally see a police car driving to the office, my closest contact with government.
