I think the greater susceptability of secularists to pseudo-science, the occult and just plain weird things like Nessie, Bigfoot, seances is tied in with liberal fear-mongering over things like GMO foods, the mythical disappearing songbirds, frogs, honeybees, and all the sky is falling panics such folks fall into. Such folks are more likely to believe in massive conspiracies too, like the CIA or the Mafia or LBJ killed JFK, 911 "trutherism", etc. "Freeing" people from traditional religious beliefs which developed over centuries and have been tested as being socially beneficial doesn't make the now "free-thinking" people rational, it just opens them up to believe all sorts of nonsense.
