We moved the funds that I can't manage to guaranteed short term investment funds about 6 months ago. They aren't making much but have been (by far) the best performing of all the available funds lately.

That's par for the course. My 401K has no PM or resource sector funds. It has PIMPCO total return, an SPX index fund, a couple of Vanguard funds (including Prime Cap), Fido Low Price Stock, a couplea TRowe Price "Life investor" blends and Neuberger Berman Genesis Trust. I've had it in cash since we started with them (around 2005), although shift a teensy (15%) to Neuberger Berman in early August. They're actually a pretty good fund and avoided most financials and all homies recently.

Most 401K's choices are similarly sucky. The only reason to participate is for the match.

"....almost all was big cap, small cap, mid cap LONG funds with tons of financials".

Those 'big crap, small crap, mid crap LONG funds' are
designed to create high-paying jobs in the USA, now that
we've successfully offshored all other non-essential low-paying
high-tech jobs.
