Why the Surge Worked

Why don't you take your surge and stick it where the sun don't shine!

>>> Not that Jack Keane would.

Keane was everything. Keane walked into Rumsfeld's office and had the most direct, absolute heart-to-heart I've ever heard of. When I read the account of it, I was floored at his directness.

So was Pace. A few days later, Pace called him in and said, "You know I appreciated your directness with Rumsfeld. Now tell me how I'm doing." Keane's response was, "Well, right now, I'd give you a grade of F".

Pace says, "Why?"

And Keane then laid it out for him. It was absolutely impressive. And he couldn't have been more right.

The surge idea also came from the Left -- Robb was the first guy to bring it up and apply that term to it. He clearly recognized what needed to happen.

Woodward provides an account where the ISG was interviewing people in Baghdad and Robb walks in and calls what they're hearing in the interviews "bullshit". He was furious because he felt they weren't getting the straight story from Casey's crew; Robb had actually been out on the streets of Baghdad to see what was happening, while the others were interviewing generals and Colonels.

There are plenty of heroes in this win and I think Woodward deserves a lot of credit for getting the facts in writing. None was more critical to our winning in Iraq than Keane. A totally impressive individual.

Keane was instrumental in turning Iraq from a disasterous loss to a win that will ultimately accomplish its goal of providing stability in the Middle East as well as reducing the threat of terrorism against the United States.
